Sessions in Neurosurgery for the Advanced Practitioner – Cerebrovascular
Overview
A team of dedicated AANS neurosurgeons, nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) developed a series of online courses to provide comprehensive training for advanced practitioners involved in neurosurgical practices. This online course covers foundational knowledge and skills needed during the onboarding phase, particularly for advanced practitioners who are new to the neurosurgical specialty, to teach and/or reinforce key concepts.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Ischemic Stroke: Acute

  1. Diagnose stroke from exam and history 
  2. Detect stroke on CT 

Ischemic Stroke: Surgical Mgmt of Arterial Stenosis

  1. Distinguish types of stroke on scan, watershed vs. wedge shaped and etiology of stroke  
  2. Discuss indications for treatment according to stenosis 

Subarachnoid hemorrhage

  1. Diagnose SAH  
  2. Initially triage and treat SAH

Hemorrhagic stroke

  1. Distinguish hemmorhage on scan  
  2. Locate etiology of hemorrhage on scan 

Unruptured aneurysms 

  1. Identify aneurysms on CTA/MRA and Agram 
  2. Discuss how morphology and location dictates coil vs clip 

AVMs/DAVF

  1. Locate on scan and risk factors for rupture 
  2. Identify anatomy including feeders and draining vessels
