Pediatric Neurosurgery for General Neurosurgeons
Overview
Most neurosurgeons are asked to see pediatric patients in their practice, either electively or on an urgent basis. This webinar is designed to provide the general neurosurgeon with up-to-date information for the general care of infants, children and adolescents with neurosurgical issues. Topics include trauma, hydrocephalus, shunts and common (also possibly incidental) lesions, such as Chiari malformations, cysts and tethered cords. The general management of brain tumors is discussed as well.
Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the stabilization and management of children with acute cranial and spinal trauma.
  • Determine the operative indications and best course of treatment for children with hydrocephalus and common, and possibly incidental, lesions, such as Chiari malformations, intracranial cysts, and tethered cords.
  • Discuss the initial management of children with brain tumors, and identify patients who might require a higher level of care.
  • Identify areas in which the general care of children differs from that of adults.
