2025 Guide to Coding
Description

This collection of procedure-related information is designed to facilitate the efforts of neurosurgeons, coding and billing personnel, office managers and third party payers in the accurate and prompt coding and processing of procedure claim information. The material is organized based on the current CPT Procedure Terminology and is designed to cover many of the services delivered in the domain of neurological surgery. A number of procedures performed by neurosurgeons are covered in other sections of the CPT codes, such as the spine codes (22100-22899) and a few other areas such as the cervical carotid endarterectomy code (35301). However, the majority of neurosurgical services are delivered within the spectrum of 61000-64999, and the more commonly performed procedures in this part of the spectrum are covered in this document. Some procedures have been covered as a group, such as 61312 and 61314, since they have basically the same inclusions and exclusions from the global service package.

This material is offered for guidance in coding and eventual reimbursement and is not intended to represent either standards of care or practice parameters since we recognize the variations in neurosurgical practices across regions, communities and between individual neurosurgeons.
